about

The electric bass guitar is often presented as the backbone of the music together with the drums.

As Paul Tutmarc conceptualised the “Model 736 Bass Fiddle” in the 1930’s, which was further developed and mass-produced in the 50’s by Leo Fender, it was exclusively meant to enhance the lower frequencies of the guitar parts in a band as a more user-friendly replacement to the double bass.

As the electric bass guitar became more prominent in music, several dedicated musicians stood up that took the instrument into new directions. Jaco Pastorius’ virtuoso playing inspired many jazz musicians, Larry Graham and Mark King made slap bass playing popular, Paul McCartney inspired many bass players to play melodic parts on their instrument, and Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell took the instrument in a post-punk, dub and experimental direction.

Not too many bass players are known for using their bass guitar into an experimental setting to play mainly ambient music and craft soundscapes. The question that was lingering in our minds: what would it sound like if multiple experimental bass players would collaborate and blended their unique sounds?

That’s when the idea rose to gather four bassists.

Enter Distant Fires Burning, Stratosphere, Crows labyrinth and Jon Doe One. All have used the bass guitar in their work extensively so they made the right companions for this album. Each recorded a track which he passed on to the next, whom in his turn did overdubs to pass it onto the next.

All 4 contributed to all 4 tracks.

This is their tribute to the Bass Guitar.
